My name is Alexander Garcia

I am a technical storyteller

“Technology is the campfire around which we tell our stories.”
― Laurie Anderson

I have the desire and drive to communicate a story in order to give someone an experience that they haven't had yet and I hope to utilize my skills with technology to do so.

Feel free to click through this site to see what I am all about and what I can do for you and send me a message on the contact me page.

Fantasy

I have spent many hours of my time conceiving and writing small works of fiction. I’ve done things from researching the positions of the planets in the future for a science fiction piece to writing a story through a series of letters between a man and his wife to drawing a map and creating places named “The ruined keep and the Oblivion Portal.”

Over the years I have picked up bits and pieces of how to write well. I’ve taken courses that explain why stories like Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings or Isaac Asimov’s Foundation are influential in our society. I’ve gathered all of this and then I think of what I want to write and what I want to read. In creating something that fascinates me I hope to also captivate others.

Web Development

The technical side to “technical storyteller” most comes out in work that I did recently for the charity organization Good News Outreach. I worked in a small team of four members to redesign their website. Over the course of the project I researched webhosting options, designed several layouts for our sponsor to select, attended meetings with our client to show our progress, and wrote several technical documents such as the scope assessment and the risk management report.

By the time that my team was finished with the project we had migrated the webhost to a better alternative with more features and usability for half the price of the previous webhost, completely changed the website layout to be more welcoming, and instructed our sponsor on how to edit the website for future events.

Videogame Development

A skill that I’m proud to say I’ve learned on my own. I took a programming course to learn the basics of computer language and then I applied my knowledge and searched for tutorials on YouTube to figure out how to make a game. The work was hard and my knowledge of programming was by no means expansive but after a couple months of trial and error I managed to make a 2D game where a little man moves around and shoots some fireballs that collide with terrain and spew particles.

I went on from that first project into learning how the unity engine worked. I completed several more tutorials on there in both 2D and 3D. In working with these projects I’ve tried my hand at drawing sprite sheets and creating models in blender. Overall I’ve nurtured my skills as a programmer and I grew to love coding games.

Film

My first experiences with storytelling were through film. My first project was a series of photographs of a paper airplane and a trashcan, a very simple protagonist and antagonist. Over the next year, I’ve worked in several different teams producing clips from thirty second teasers to recreated scenes of famous films. The most important project was one that took a year to make. Our group named the short “Phase One” and I was the chief editor for the film. Because of equipment limitations there was only so much time that I could work with the editing software during normal hours. I’ve spent an additional 40 or more hours before and after normal work times in order to change the film to be exactly how I wanted it.

At the end of that project our film was shown in an auditorium with a few hundred people watching. That viewing and their reactions to the film were one of the best experiences in my life. Since then I’ve gone on to make several other projects including one promotional film for a client that I worked with. Through film I’ve learned how to communicate visually and my experiences with this media I have taken and applied to my other works.
